Autumn is a spectacular sight to behold here. Shimmering, golden aspen groves light up the valley. And vibrant yellow, orange, and red leaves create brilliant contrast with the surrounding pine trees. Take a hike along the Rainbow Trail and admire some of the best fall foliage in Colorado, just minutes from downtown Westcliffe.

Peak aspen season is usually from late September or early October through about mid-October, depending on the season and particular elevation.

Our weather—though never entirely predictable—typically remains fairly mild with plenty of sunny days. So, all the outdoor activities you love are still possible and thoroughly enjoyable.

Hunters, who anxiously await this season all year, will enjoy great conditions for elk and deer hunting in the Wet Mountain Valley and Sangre de Cristo mountains.

But no matter your hobbies or interests, you’ll be stunned by the great natural beauty of Custer County in the fall.
