Hunt in one of Colorado's most beautiful settings
The Wet Mountain Valley, Sangre De Cristo mountains, and surrounding area present many opportunities for hunters seeking elk, deer, antelope, black bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and more. Living in Westcliffe affords you easy access to Game Management Units 84, 86, and 69. You’ll find exceptional public and private land hunting, plus top-notch, experienced guides who can put together an unforgettable trip.

State Wildlife Areas

DeWeese Resevoir State Wildlife Area

Hunt for antelope, waterfowl, dove, coyote, cottontail, deer, or small game just 10 minutes from downtown Westcliffe. The wildlife area spans over 2,366 areas.

Hunt for deer elk, blue grouse, and bear on this 493-acre wildlife area just 20 minutes west of downtown Westcliffe.

Game management units

GMU 69

Spans Custer and Fremont Counties. Slightly higher density of deer found on west end. Summer concentrations found at higher elevations in the San Isabel National Forest. The unit is totally limited for elk. Licenses can be obtained by application of leftover only. There are no OTC licenses.

GMU 86

Spanning Custer, Fremont, and Chaffee Counties. Reportedly, elk are found throughout, with best results at high elevations in the earlier seasons. Mule deer inhabit both lower and higher elevations containing more pinon/juniper and brushy vegetation. There are very low whitetail numbers and almost exclusively on private land.

GMU 84

The best place to start for deer hunting is on the north end of the Greenhorns. Good hunting can be found on private lands, but permission difficult and needs to be obtained early. Pueblo Reservior SWA offers opportunities for late season hunts. The tags in this unit are limited license only for elk – draw or leftover license only. There are no OTC licenses.
